Black Oak Presents: A Quarterly Journal of Mid-American Culture

In our Winter 2010 issue, we bring you short stories by Chavo Antonio, Amelia Cotter, Ulysses Gerdes, and Andy Nowicki, plus art and photography by Mark Swain, Dean M. Vandenhoy, Jamie Williams & more! Plus, you won't want to miss our interview with "Jessamyn and Charles" a musical duo from Peoria, Illinois and winner of our 2010 local music search!

"I will say I despise the snobbery you often encounter which says that a place like Peoria can’t produce any relevant or cool cultural artists or artifacts," Charles tells us. "That’s untrue. Peoria is definitely “uncool” by virtue of it being an out of the way, Midwest fly-over city, famous mainly for tractors. But uncool should be celebrated. It’s the place of rock." We wholeheartedly agree.

In "Separate Thirsts," one of our four featured narratives, Robert Klein Engler brings our readers a 365-line pastoral poem that emphasizes that for us, the real pastoral setting just might be suburbia. "It is into this suburban setting that the death of love comes as a rude awakening," he writes. “The Road” by Jason Fairchild beautifully accentuates Robert's poem. Throughout this issue of Black Oak Presents, artwork, photography, and prose are intertwined in an artistic unity of expression.
